Calico kitten,
Bunching muscles,
Leaps
For the window sill.
But the sill is high, narrow, and hard.
Claws find no purchase.
It falls
Landing unhurt
And licks its paws,
Pretending
It never lost its dignity.
Laughter ripples through my mind.
Infant granddaughter stands,
Attempts a step,
But plops
Onto thick diaper,
A look of
Surprise
Upon her face.
A chuckle bubbles through my mind.
For they will grow,
Try again,
And succeed.
But when I stretch for new
Joy
And fall
The laughter turns bitter.
I wonder
Is it too late?
Am I just
An old
Fool?
