A summer storm, rare in California,
Filled the sky with darkness,
Roiling clouds, and lightning
That thundered on count of two.
A child stood in the lee of her home
Sheltered from the wind
Hair sticking to her forehead from the warm rain
And watched in wonder.
Horses reared, whinnied, and raced round the pasture
Tails held high, mane whipping in the wind.
The flash struck ground! Wheat field aflame!
Important news, which the child ran to tell.
