Mother

I remember the consequences

Of the roads I've never taken,

As I gaze into beloved eyes

Just the shade of blue as mine.

For all that I was not allowed,

Those rules youth was meant to bend,

I recall my dear child's future

And I fear my past again.

In his innocent face I see

The truth behind her fears.

And I regret her secret pain,

In his fury, and his fears.

As with still wet cheeks he falls asleep,

Oblivious to my cares,

In the dark, I kneel beside his bed

And repeat my mother's prayers.
