DRUNK DRIVER'S DUE

Useless legs are pounded with a fist in anger and hate.
As a bright student rebels against the cruelty of fate.

Rage fills his heart with a sense of hopelessness and dread.
His hurting mind considers the thought of suicide instead.

A metal halo braces his injured spine with many bolts and screws.
While his right arm wears a molded cast, a drunk driver's dues.

It will be many months before his feet will touch the tile floor.
But he will never feel the coldness or smoothness anymore.

Somewhere a drunken fool continues to race his car a dangerous speed.
Until another innocent person is caught by his alcoholic deed.

His feet will transport him to a club for a drink and a dance.
While his paralyzed victim waits in the hospital for another chance.
